About Me
Hi, I'm Spencer - an independent celebrant based in Leeds but working across the UK.
In a nutshell: I trained in theatre, taught for 9 years, and then moved 'up north' for love. I'm a published writer of poetry and non-fiction (a perfect combination for a celebrant perhaps?) as well as having extensive experience of creating family theatre shows, delivering arts workshops and public speaking. I love Northern Soul music, can't live without cake and try to get outdoors as much as possible.
Becoming a celebrant was the easiest decision I've ever made. My work as a teacher and workshop leader has always been about people - getting to know them and getting the best out of them. As a writer it's been about capturing a person's story and then finding the best words or forms to tell it in the most exacting way. I'm also a big old romantic who sees so much joy in the world and that's the energy I would bring to your ceremony.
As a proud queer man I want to create bold, authentic and heartwarming ceremonies for people who have often felt on the outside, looking in.
When I was at school, Section 28 was in full force and that meant growing up thinking happy gay and queer couples didn't exist, that love was something for everyone else and not for me. It took a long time to learn that wasn't true, but it's why I'm now so passionate about celebrating the love people have for each other, in all its glorious and persevering forms.
One of my favourite poets, Mary Oliver, sums up my approach to being a celebrant quite nicely with this question;
'Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?'
